Shelter Support Units

The purchase of the Hampton Roads Shelter Support Units (SSUs) are one component of a regionalShelter Support Unit Trailer and Load Diagram initiative started over 5 years ago to improve the region's sheltering capabilities. Using funds from the Department of Homeland Security Urban Areas Security Initiative and the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Medical Response System, 13 Shelter Support Units were purchased, equipped and distributed to communities in the Hampton Roads region.

 

Each of the following jurisdictions have a Shelter Support Unit:

  • Chesapeake
  • Gloucester County
  • Franklin
  • Hampton
  • Isle of Wight County
  • James City County
  • Newport News
  • Norfolk
  • Portsmouth
  • Suffolk
  • Virginia Beach
  • York County

The HRMMRS began as a DHS Grant Program in 1999. The HRMMRS continues to support & enhance Hampton Roads public safety, hospital, public health, & emergency management response capabilities to manage mass casualty incidents.
